iherir:
an oasis for the soul
Iherir is a valley located in the Tassili n'Ajjer region , known for its unique landscape of cliffs , gueltas (natural pools) , and lush oases . It has been a critical refuge for human and animal life over thousands of years , evidenced by its rich collection of prehistoric rock art . The art , found on nearby plateaus like Tadjelahine , dates back to 9,000 BCE and depicts scenes of pastoral life , wildlife , and human figures , offering insights into the region's early Neolithic cultures . Today , Iherir is part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is also designated as a Ramsar site , recognized for its cultural and ecological importance . The valley is still inhabited by Tuareg communities , who engage in small - scale agriculture and tourism focused on the area's ancient heritage and natural beauty .

Ancient Art
Iherir is famous for its ancient rock art , dating back to around 9,000 BCE . These artworks depict scenes of early Neolithic life , including herding and hunting , as well as wildlife such as giraffes and elephants, reflecting the region's earlier savanna - like environment . The art offers insights into the cultural and environmental changes in the Sahara over millennia .
Ecological Refuge
Idaren Valley
The ecological importance of Iherir , a Ramsar site , is primarily due to its gueltas , natural water sources that create an oasis environment in the heart of the Sahara . These pools support a variety of plant and animal life , including endemic species and migratory birds , making the valley a biodiversity hotspot in an otherwise arid region . The gueltas also sustain local Tuareg communities , who use the water for small - scale agriculture .
Idaren Valley , located near Iherir , is renowned for its striking sandstone formations and ancient rock art . Erosion has carved the valley into dramatic cliffs and gorges , while prehistoric engravings depict early Saharan life , including hunting and herding . The valley’s seasonal water sources also support wildlife and vegetation , making it both an archaeological and ecological treasure in the Sahara .
